Karma Animal Trust

About

DAofTahoes Nikki Mares became involved in rescuing street dogs in Rishikesh, India in 2016.

Karma Animal Trust (KAT) is an NGO officially registered in India. We provide medical care to the animals of Rishikesh. KAT is run by volunteers and is based on donations.

Our goal is to make Rishikesh safe and friendly for animals and bring awareness to people about animals’ rights.

The most fundamental action we can take is to have a way to control the population of street dogs in a third world country as India. When the population is limited it dramatically changes the quality of the dogs lives and the attitude of local people towards them. By lowering the population our dogs cease fighting for territory, competition for food, and minimizes the spread of diseases like rabies, distemper and parvo.

Since 2014 we participated actively to Animal Birth Control Project organized by Siberia-India. During the Project more than 300 dogs in Rishikesh were sterilized. If you find yourself in Rishikesh you can recognize the dogs who’ve been sterilized with a special earcut we make during operation. This helps us and other good doers keep track of who has been sterilized and vaccinated.
